A rare T206 Honus Wagner returns to the auction block

A mysterious T206 Honus Wagner card that has been restored and graded Authentic is set to reach the auction market later this month. The card, known in hobby circles as the Die-Cut Wagner, will be offered by Love of the Game Auctions during its summer sale, which opens in late July and closes on Aug. 8.

The T206 Honus Wagner remains one of the most famous cards in the hobby and is widely regarded as the holy grail of sports cards. Any example draws attention, but this one comes with a long and unusual history that adds another layer to its appeal.

How the Die-Cut Wagner surfaced

According to Love of the Game Auctions, the card was recently discovered in a collection and later examined by CGC, which graded it Authentic - Restored. The auction house says the card had been out of public view since the mid-1990s before resurfacing this spring.

The card was first found in a New Jersey card shop in the mid-1970s and purchased for $1 in heavily compromised condition. At that time, the background had been almost entirely trimmed off. The card later moved through the hands of noted collectors and eventually sold at auction for nearly $10,000 in the mid-1990s.

From there, it disappeared from the public eye for decades. Love of the Game says the current owner did not realize the card was the Die-Cut Wagner and had placed it in a Lucite screw-down holder, using it as a paperweight.

Restoration and identification

The auction house says the owner commissioned an expert paper conservator to restore the card, sight unseen, without knowing its full significance. After learning in April that the card might be the Die-Cut Wagner, the collector brought it to Love of the Game for review.

LOTG compared a high-resolution scan of the original card with a close-up photo of the paperweight and concluded the two were one and the same. The card was then evaluated by Andy Broome, vice president of grading at CGC, who confirmed it was the original Die-Cut Wagner and assigned the Authentic - Restored grade.

What Love of the Game says about the card

Love of the Game founder and auction director Al Crisafulli said the card has a story unlike almost any other T206 Wagner.

Every T206 Wagner has a story, Crisafulli said. This one has a story so extraordinary, it includes a plot twist.

Crisafulli also described the restored card as having pristine centering, clean borders and an exceptional presentation. He said the card stands as both an example of one of the hobby's greatest cards and a testament to survival and preservation.

The auction house called it one of the most beautiful, compelling and controversial T206 Wagners the collecting world will ever see.

Why the T206 Honus Wagner remains so significant

The T206 Honus Wagner has long held a special place in the sports card hobby. Its scarcity, history and status as one of the most recognizable cards ever made have made it a centerpiece in major collections and headline auctions for decades.

That reputation makes any newly surfaced example important news, especially when the card has a documented chain of discovery, sale, disappearance and rediscovery. In this case, the added layer of restoration and the Die-Cut nickname give the card a particularly unusual backstory.

For collectors, the combination of rarity, provenance and condition discussion is part of what makes the card such a notable auction item. Even with its restored designation, it remains tied to one of the most famous names in the history of the hobby.

Auction timing and availability

The restored Die-Cut Wagner will be part of Love of the Game Auctions' summer sale. The auction opens in late July and closes on Aug. 8.

With a history that stretches from a New Jersey card shop to a modern expert grading review, the card now returns to public view as one of the most unusual Honus Wagner examples to surface in years.
