Ethan Salas call-up puts a spotlight on his card market
Ethan Salas has been on the radar of baseball card collectors since his first Bowman Chrome card appeared in the 2023 Bowman product, and his latest milestone only adds more attention. The San Diego Padres announced on September 1 that the organization would call up its No. 1 prospect, giving fans and collectors a new reason to watch one of the sport's most closely followed young catchers.
Salas is MLB Pipeline's No. 23 overall prospect and is now positioned to become the youngest player behind the plate since Ivan Rodriguez debuted for the Texas Rangers in 1991. He first turned heads by reaching Double-A as a 17-year-old catcher, and after quieter stat lines over the past two seasons, 2026 has brought a strong rebound at the plate. He is hitting .296 with 10 home runs and 61 RBI across Double-A and Triple-A, which helped earn the promotion.

According to Card Ladder, the card sold through auction on September 19, 2023, for $9,100.
No. 2 - 2023 Bowman 1st True Red Autograph #/5
Salas' second-highest sale is another 2023 Bowman 1st Chrome autograph, this time the true red version numbered to five. The card is visually similar to the Red Wave autograph, but the true red parallel has been the stronger seller.
Card Ladder lists the sale at $13,014 through auction on September 28, 2023.
No. 1 - 2023 Bowman 1st 1-of-1 Superfractor Autograph
The top sale for Salas so far is his 2023 Bowman 1st Superfractor Autograph, a one-of-one card graded PSA NM-MT 8 with a 10 autograph grade. Like his other Bowman Chrome cards, it features the same basic image, but the Superfractor finish gives it the recognizable gold circular pattern collectors chase in premium prospect markets.
The card was sold by Goldin Auctions, where it drew 15 bids and finished at $36,600. It was the first graded card on this list and remains the benchmark sale for Salas in the hobby.
Why Salas remains a major prospect card name
The Padres' decision to keep Salas out of trade discussions earlier this year signaled how highly the organization values him. With two catchers already on the big league roster, his exact role was not immediately clear at the time of the announcement, but the promotion still adds another layer to a player already viewed as a long-term piece.
Salas also brings a left-handed bat to the Padres' mix as they push toward October, which gives his debut added intrigue beyond the prospect hype. For collectors, that combination of age, position, pedigree, and early Bowman Chrome scarcity has already made his cards a target in the market.
His early sales show how much attention the hobby has placed on numbered autographs and one-of-one parallels from 2023 Bowman. With the major league debut now in view, Salas' market will continue to be one of the more closely watched among young baseball prospects.
