Sandy Koufax rookie card sets a new public-sale record

A 1955 Topps Sandy Koufax rookie card graded PSA 9 sold for $604,736 to headline Memory Lane Inc.'s Summer Rarities Auction, which finished with more than $7.5 million in sales. The result set a new public-sale record for the Hall of Fame left-hander, topping the previous mark of $396,000 established in 2022.

Koufax remains one of the most celebrated pitchers in baseball history, both for his postseason dominance and for the strong demand his key cards continue to draw in the hobby. The auction result adds another milestone to a vintage baseball market that continues to reward high-grade examples of iconic rookies and scarce pre-war issues.

More record results from the auction

The Koufax card was not the only headline result in the sale. Memory Lane said the auction produced several records across baseball and basketball, along with strong prices for rare memorabilia and vintage wax.

Among the top baseball results was a 1971 Topps #630 Roberto Clemente graded PSA 9, which sold for $170,579. Two pre-war cards also crossed into six figures, including a hand-cut 1923 W515-1 #47 Babe Ruth graded PSA 10 at $137,582 and a blank-back 1916 M101-4 Sporting News #87 Joe Jackson graded PSA 7 at $134,579.

Other notable baseball sales included a 1938 Goudey Heads Up #274 Joe DiMaggio PSA 8 for $108,665, a 1939 Play Ball #92 Ted Williams rookie SGC 8.5 for $68,256, and a 1934 Goudey #1 Jimmie Foxx PSA 8 for $39,832.

Vintage baseball cards draw strong bidding

The auction also featured several late-1880s and early-1930s cards that continued to attract serious attention from collectors. An 1888 N28 Allen & Ginter Cap Anson card graded PSA 8 brought $53,479, while an 1888 N162 Goodwin Champions Beecher graded SGC 1 sold for $19,031. A 1933 Goudey #160 Lou Gehrig graded SGC 3 realized $20,011.

Postwar stars remained strong as well. A 1951 Bowman #253 Mickey Mantle graded PSA 7 sold for $125,794, and a 1951 Bowman #305 Willie Mays rookie graded PSA 7 brought $105,888. A 1954 Topps #128 Hank Aaron rookie graded PSA 8 sold for $66,496, while a 1950 Bowman #22 Jackie Robinson graded PSA 8 set a record at $68,256.

Two additional 1950 Bowman cards also reached record levels in the auction. A Bob Feller graded PSA 9 sold for $20,188, and a Ralph Kiner graded PSA 9 brought $24,427.

Memorable postwar and 1970s card results

Other postwar baseball cards posted notable prices, including a 1959 Topps #10 Mickey Mantle graded PSA 8.5 for $56,153, a 1963 Topps #390 Hank Aaron graded PSA 9 for $37,027, and a 1964 Topps #440 Roberto Clemente graded PSA 9 for $31,613. A 1954 Topps #201 Al Kaline rookie graded PSA 8.5 sold for $21,494.

Gem-mint 1970s cards also performed well. A 1975 Topps Mini #223 Robin Yount rookie sold for $43,998, while a 1972 Topps #695 Rod Carew brought $22,054. A 1972 Topps #447 Willie Stargell set a record at $15,035.

Vintage wax was part of the mix too, with a BBCE-authenticated 1959 Fleer Ted Williams baseball wax box selling for $39,907.

Rare memorabilia and early baseball collectibles

Early memorabilia added another layer to the auction's results. A 1916 Ferguson Bakery collection containing 95 of the set's 97 felt pennants sold for $46,198. The Joe Jackson and Honus Wagner pennants were offered separately, with the Jackson flag bringing $14,682.

The range of results showed strong demand across multiple collecting categories, from pre-war baseball cards and scarce memorabilia to high-grade postwar stars and modern-era basketball highlights.

Basketball cards also post major results

Basketball led by a signed 1986 Fleer #57 Michael Jordan rookie card graded PSA 5 with a 7 autograph, which sold for $146,579. A factory-sealed 1984 Star Chicago Bulls team bag from Jordan's rookie season also set a record at $134,579.

Those results added to an auction that drew attention well beyond baseball, with major prices appearing across the hobby's most collected eras and sports.

Memory Lane's Summer Rarities Auction tops $7.5 million

With the Koufax rookie leading the way, Memory Lane's Summer Rarities Auction finished above $7.5 million in total sales. The final tally reflected strong interest in elite-condition vintage cards, rare pre-war pieces, and historically significant memorabilia from across the sports card market.

For collectors tracking the vintage market, the auction offered another reminder that top-tier examples of Hall of Famers and key rookies continue to command premium prices when they surface in public sales.
