Rayquaza’s Long Run as a Pokémon TCG Chase Card
Rayquaza has been one of the most dependable dragon cards in the Pokémon TCG for more than 20 years. Since debuting as the box art legendary of Pokémon Emerald, it has remained a consistent name in the chase-card conversation.
What makes Rayquaza stand out is the depth of its market. Many legendary Pokémon have one or two cards that carry most of their value, but Rayquaza has had headline cards across the EX era, SP era, Black & White, Sun & Moon, and Sword & Shield. Those cards still trade today, which gives collectors several different entry points depending on budget and preference.

1. Rayquaza 107/107 - EX Deoxys Gold Star
The Gold Star Rayquaza from EX Deoxys is the clear centerpiece of the character’s card history. Illustrated by Masakazu Fukuda, it shows Rayquaza in its Shiny form and carries the Gold Star designation that made these cards so difficult to pull and so desirable to collectors.
Gold Star cards were intentionally scarce, and the deck rule limiting players to a single Pokémon Gold Star reinforced that sense of rarity. Even though the card itself is only a Colorless Basic with 90 HP, the gameplay text is not what drives demand. Spiral Rush flips until tails for 30 damage per heads, while Holy Star discards all Energy attached to deal 100 damage to each of the opponent’s Pokémon ex. The attacks are secondary to the card’s status as one of the most important Rayquaza collectibles ever printed.
Market data shows just how strong the card remains. Raw copies have sold from around $3,000 for heavily played examples to $16,500 for clean copies. Graded 10 sales since early summer have ranged from roughly $25,000 to $50,000, and one private sale in July reportedly reached $682,500.
For collectors focused on the top tier of Rayquaza cards, the Gold Star is the benchmark.
2. Rayquaza VMAX 218/203 - Evolving Skies Alternate Art Secret Rare
Evolving Skies became one of the most talked-about modern Pokémon sets because it split attention between Eeveelutions and dragons. On the dragon side, Rayquaza VMAX served as the set’s major chase card, and the alternate art Secret Rare version is the one that has drawn the most attention.
This card features alternate art by Anesaki Dynamic, separate from the PLANETA Mochizuki artwork used on the regular 111/203 print and the rainbow rare 217/203 version. That distinction matters to collectors because the alternate art gives the card a different visual identity from the rest of the Rayquaza VMAX lineup.
Mechanically, it is a 320 HP VMAX with Azure Pulse, an ability that discards your hand for three fresh cards. Its Max Burst attack starts at 20 damage and adds 80 more for every basic Fire or Lightning Energy you discard. While the card was a strong part of the set’s appeal, its long-term value has been driven by the combination of Rayquaza popularity, alternate art demand, and Evolving Skies’ overall collector interest.
Recent raw sales have ranged from about $550 to $1,400 depending on condition. Graded 9 copies sit near $1,200, while graded 10 examples have traded for around $2,500.
Among modern Rayquaza cards, this is the one most likely to stay near the top of collector wish lists.
3. Rayquaza-EX 123/124 - Dragons Exalted Full Art Ultra Rare
The full art Rayquaza-EX from Dragons Exalted is another major card in the character’s history and one that helped define Rayquaza’s place in the Black & White era. The 5ban Graphics full art shows Rayquaza as a Dragon-type Basic with 170 HP, and it was a true format pillar in 2012.
Its Celestial Roar attack lets you dig three cards deep and attach any Energy found there, setting up Dragon Burst. That attack discards all basic Fire or all basic Lightning Energy attached to Rayquaza-EX and deals 60 damage for each card discarded. The card’s competitive relevance helped establish it as more than just a collector piece, and that combination of playability and full-art appeal has kept it in demand.
Raw copies have seen a wide range of results, from under $100 for damaged examples to more than $600 for clean copies. The graded market is much stronger, with graded 9 copies clearing around $4,000 and graded 10 cards selling in the neighborhood of $5,000.
For collectors who want a Rayquaza card with strong era significance and a serious full-art presence, Dragons Exalted remains one of the best options.

Rayquaza’s card history is unusually deep, and that is a big reason the character continues to matter in the Pokémon TCG market. The Gold Star from EX Deoxys sits at the top because of its scarcity and iconic status. The Evolving Skies alternate art VMAX represents the modern chase-card era at its strongest. The Dragons Exalted full art Rayquaza-EX bridges collector appeal and competitive history in a way that still resonates.
