Upper Deck Series 1 Returns to Open the NHL Season

The start of a new NHL season always brings familiar signs of hockey’s return. Training camp battles begin, veterans work back into game shape, and the defending Stanley Cup champions raise their banner before the first puck drop. For hockey card collectors, it also means the chase begins again for the newest Young Guns, inserts, parallels, and case hits in Upper Deck Series 1.

Upper Deck has scheduled 2026-27 Upper Deck Series 1 for release on October 7. The flagship set stays close to its established formula, mixing rookie cards, numbered parallels, and returning insert themes with a few new additions for collectors to track down.

Young Guns Remain the Main Attraction

Young Guns continues to be the centerpiece of Upper Deck Series 1 and one of the most recognizable rookie card lines in the hobby. The 2026-27 checklist includes 49 players, blending recent draft picks, prospects with pro experience, and young skaters expected to take on larger roles this season.

Among the most prominent names are Porter Martone, James Hagens, and Anton Frondell. Martone is a first-line winger for the Flyers who recorded 10 points in nine regular-season games and added five more in the playoffs last season. Hagens, the No. 5 pick in the 2025 draft, brings top-six upside to a talented Bruins roster. Frondell, selected No. 3 last year, is skating on Chicago’s first line with Patrick Kane and could eventually share power-play time with Connor Bedard.

The checklist also includes two Capitals prospects with notable family ties. Cole Hutson, the younger brother of Canadiens standout Lane Hutson, produced 10 points in 14 NHL games last season. Forward Ilya Protas, the reigning AHL Rookie of the Year, is starting the year on Washington’s third line alongside his brother Aliaksei.

As always, Young Guns will be available in base form along with the familiar chase for parallel versions. Returning parallels include acetate Clear Cut, Deluxe numbered to 250, Exclusives numbered to 100, High Gloss numbered to 10, Silver, Red numbered to 25, and one-of-one Gold Outbursts.

Returning Inserts Carry the Familiar Upper Deck Identity

Upper Deck Series 1 keeps several established insert sets in the mix, giving collectors a mix of familiar designs and new rookie-focused targets. Returning inserts include Dazzlers, Debut Dates, Population Count, and UD Canvas.

Population Count remains part of the lineup and continues to be one of the more recognizable returning concepts in the product. The set also carries parallels that range from 1,000 to 1, which keeps the chase alive across multiple tiers.

These returning inserts help preserve the look and feel that has defined Upper Deck’s flagship hockey release for years, while still leaving room for fresh concepts to stand out in the product.

New Insert Sets Add Fresh Designs

Two new insert sets join the 2026-27 Series 1 lineup: Here We Go! and Stencils.

Here We Go! features an overhead view of players in the faceoff circle. The design gives the set a different visual angle from the standard action and portrait images typically found in hockey releases.

Stencils brings a more minimalist look. The 100-card set uses a shoulder-up player portrait, the player’s last name, and the Upper Deck logo, all rendered in foil. The design is intentionally stripped down, relying on color and finish rather than a busy background or action shot.

Stencils also comes with six parallel colors, beginning with red numbered to 399 and running through purple numbered to 25. That gives collectors another rainbow-style chase within the insert lineup.

Super Short Print Cards Add Another Layer of Chase

Upper Deck Series 1 also includes a group of super short print cards that are designed to be especially difficult to land. Holotypes returns as part of the product and is described by Upper Deck as a living set that expands with each Series 1 release. The next Holotypes installment carries pack odds of 1 in 1,008.

Additional SSP cards are even tougher, falling at 1 in 2,880 packs. Based on those odds, they work out to roughly one ultra-rare hit every 20 cases on average.

Among the SSP chase cards are Bootlegs, which return in a second edition featuring Macklin Celebrini and Matthew Schaefer among the young stars highlighted in the set. Each of the 18 Bootleg cards has its own design and uses a mix of foil, soft-touch, and gloss finishes.

Electric Soul also makes its Series 1 debut. The insert presents each player in a single hue against a background built from the team’s primary colors.

Youthful Spirits takes a different approach by replacing traditional action photography with original artwork. The 12-card set pairs NHL stars such as Bedard and Celebrini with paintings created specifically for the release by award-winning Aboriginal artist Presten Warren.

What Collectors Can Expect From the Flagship Release

Upper Deck Series 1 has long served as the opening chapter of the hockey card season, and the 2026-27 edition continues that role with a mix of rookie cards, inserts, and rare hits. The product’s appeal starts with Young Guns, but the checklist also offers enough variety to keep veteran collectors engaged through the return of established inserts and the introduction of new designs.

For collectors focused on rookies, the 49-card Young Guns checklist provides several of the most closely watched names in the class. For insert collectors, the new Here We Go! and Stencils sets add fresh visual options alongside familiar Upper Deck staples. And for those chasing the hardest pulls, Holotypes and the SSP cards remain the biggest long-shot targets in the release.

With its October 7 release date, 2026-27 Upper Deck Series 1 will soon give hockey collectors their first major flagship chase of the new season.
