Topps Chrome Update Basketball Arrives as a New Extension
Topps is expanding its flagship Chrome basketball lineup for the first time with 2025-26 Topps Chrome Update Basketball. The product adds a new layer to the brand and brings several notable chase cards, including the first slate of NBA Rookie Debut Patch Autographs.
Topps has not yet announced box configuration details, but a Topps.com pre-order is scheduled for July 7, 2026.
Base Set Brings Rookie Photography and Alternate Jersey Looks
The base set will feature rookie cards with in-game photography for the league’s top first-year players. For veterans, Topps is using images from games in which teams wore alternate uniforms, including City Edition jerseys.
The checklist also gives collectors their first official Topps Chrome look at Luka Dončić in the Update release. Dončić was not included in the flagship product, but he will appear here in base form and as one of the players featured in short-printed Image Variations that use portrait photography.
Topps is also adding rare Minions variations to select base cards. These cards reimagine players as if they were one of the yellow characters from the Illumination film series.
Parallels and Short Prints
A complete parallel lineup has not been announced yet, but Topps says collectors can expect familiar Refractor colors along with other special patterns. Many of those parallels are expected to be serial-numbered, though the full breakdown has not been revealed.
Image Variations will add another layer of scarcity to the base set, while the Minions cards should stand out as some of the most unusual cards in the release.
Autographs Stay on Card
Autographs are expected to be a major part of the product, and Topps says the signatures will be plentiful and signed on-card. The company has confirmed Gold (/50), Orange (/25), Red (/5), and Superfractor 1/1 versions for Chrome Autographs.
Topps is also continuing its tribute to the 1980-81 set with Throwback Autographs in multiple colors. A full rainbow has not been detailed, but the confirmed numbering gives collectors a clear early picture of the chase tiers.
NBA Rookie Debut Patch Autographs Highlight the Release
The biggest attention-grabber in 2025-26 Topps Chrome Update Basketball is the debut of NBA Rookie Debut Patch Autographs. Topps says the checklist will include names such as Cooper Flagg, Kon Knueppel, Dylan Harper, and others.
These cards are described as hard-signed 1/1s and include a special patch worn only during a player’s NBA debut. Topps has not shown the final design yet, and many of the cards are expected to arrive as redemptions.
The debut patch concept has become one of the most sought-after ideas in modern basketball cards, and the Update release will mark the first time it appears in Topps Chrome Basketball.
Inserts Include Chrome Favorites and New Basketball Debuts
Several insert themes are set to return or make their basketball debut in the product.
- Glass Canvas returns after becoming one of the most popular super short print inserts in the flagship Chrome set.
- Fanatical inserts are back as a retail-exclusive super short print chase.
- Alter Egos is new to basketball, though collectors of baseball cards may recognize it from 2025 Topps Chrome Update.
Each of those insert lines adds a different type of chase, from visual-driven SSP cards to a concept that crosses over from another sport.
