December brought the highly anticipated release of Bowman Draft, a cornerstone product for baseball card enthusiasts. Known for debuting First Bowman cards of players from the previous year’s draft, this set is a hallmark for collectors, showcasing a mix of first-round picks while reserving a few marquee names for Bowman Baseball in the following year.
This year, Bowman Draft held back third overall pick Charlie Condon and eighth overall pick JJ Wetherholt for the 2025 release. While their absence left collectors with something to look forward to, the current set still offered plenty of intrigue, including cards for Travis Bazzana, the first overall pick, and Jac Caglianone, the sixth overall pick and one of the most electrifying players in college baseball.
Caglianone, often compared to Shohei Ohtani for his two-way dominance, made headlines by becoming the first college baseball player to sign an exclusive deal with Fanatics and Topps during his time at the University of Florida. Though Topps refrained from producing cards of him in a college uniform at the time, collectors now have access to cards from other sources capturing his collegiate journey.
Baseball’s developmental system differs significantly from other major sports, where top athletes often make an immediate leap to the pros. In contrast, baseball players usually spend years refining their skills in the minors. This dynamic makes prospecting through First Bowman cards both a thrilling and risky endeavor. For collectors, the payoff comes when a player reaches the majors and fulfills their potential, transforming these cards into coveted assets.
Topps has long embraced innovation in the hobby, and the introduction of Chrome College Variations in this year’s Bowman Draft is no exception. This subset bridges the gap between professional and collegiate baseball, giving fans a unique opportunity to collect cards that celebrate players’ college careers. Though not a dedicated college set, these cards are the closest Topps has come to integrating collegiate baseball into its Bowman lineup. The response has been remarkable—Jac Caglianone’s college card from this subset recently sold for an impressive $6,500, setting a new record for the highest-priced Florida Gators card.
The checklist for the Chrome College Variations subset features ten standout players: Travis Bazzana, Hagen Smith, Jac Caglianone, Christian Moore, Ryan Waldschmidt, Carson Benge, James Tibbs III, Braden Montgomery, Cam Smith, and Blake Burke. These cards are highly sought after, with base versions appearing at odds of 1:713 in hobby packs and 1:185 in super jumbo packs. Collectors can also chase rare parallels, including gold refractors numbered to 50, orange refractors numbered to 25, red refractors numbered to 5, and the coveted 1/1 Superfractor.
This new addition to Bowman Draft has breathed fresh life into the hobby. The Chrome College Variations offer something for everyone: the excitement of collecting future MLB stars, the nostalgia of college sports, and the thrill of finding rare and valuable cards. For collectors, it’s not just about the cards themselves but the stories they tell and the connections they create between players and fans.
Bowman Draft continues to evolve, and the inclusion of college-themed cards signals Topps’ commitment to pushing the boundaries of what the hobby can offer. Whether you’re a seasoned collector or a newcomer drawn in by the unique appeal of these cards, this year’s Bowman Draft proves that the world of baseball cards is as dynamic and exciting as ever.
