TCG Sales Surge Past $11.3 Million in One Week

Trading card game sales reached another level during the week of Sept. 13-20, with the five biggest sales combining for $11,339,471, according to Card Ladder data. The total was more than five times the nearly $2.2 million posted by the top five sales the previous week.

The headline was a pair of Pikachu Illustrator cards that together accounted for more than $7.8 million. A PSA 10 Black Lotus also cleared $2.2 million, while a sealed Pokémon 1st Edition Base Set booster box and a PSA 10 Charizard rounded out a Top 5 in which every sale topped $500,000.

No. 5: 2002 Pokémon Legendary Collection Charizard Reverse Holo PSA 10

The week’s fifth-largest TCG sale was a 2002 Pokémon Legendary Collection Charizard Reverse Holo #3 graded PSA 10, which sold for $575,000 through Heritage on Sept. 18.

Legendary Collection is known for its reverse holo treatment, and the set’s distinctive look has made it one of the most recognizable Pokémon releases of its era. Even at No. 5, the sale set a high bar for the rest of the week’s leaderboard.

No. 4: 1999 Pokémon 1st Edition Base Set Sealed Booster Box

At No. 4 was not a single card, but one of the hobby’s most important sealed products. A 1999 Pokémon 1st Edition Base Set sealed booster box sold for $750,000 through Heritage on Sept. 18.

Each box contains 36 unopened booster packs, and the appeal of a sealed box from the set that helped launch Pokémon in the United States remains clear. The possibility of finding a 1st Edition Charizard inside only adds to the draw, especially as sealed vintage Pokémon products become harder to locate.

No. 3: 1993 Magic: The Gathering Limited Edition Alpha Black Lotus PSA 10

Magic: The Gathering broke up the Pokémon run at No. 3 with one of the most famous cards in trading card history. A 1993 Magic: The Gathering Limited Edition Alpha Black Lotus graded PSA 10 sold for $2,208,200 through Goldin on Sept. 19.

As the original 1993 release of Magic, Alpha carries major historical significance, and Black Lotus remains the game’s signature card. In PSA 10 grade, the card crossed the $2 million mark and became the week’s third-largest sale.

No. 2: 1998 Pokémon Japanese CoroCoro Comic Promo Illustrator Pikachu CGC 9

The first Pikachu Illustrator card on the list came in at No. 2. A 1998 Pokémon Japanese CoroCoro Comic Promo Holo Illustrator Pikachu graded CGC 9 sold for $2,806,271 through Goldin on Sept. 19.

Pikachu Illustrator cards were awarded through illustration contests held by Japan’s CoroCoro Comic and were never distributed through packs or traditional retail channels. That unusual origin, along with the card’s limited distribution and Pikachu’s enduring popularity, has made it one of the most coveted trophy cards in Pokémon collecting.

In most weeks, a sale of nearly $2.81 million would dominate the conversation. This time, it was only second on the list.

No. 1: Pokémon Pikachu Illustrator Unnumbered Promo PSA 9

The top sale of the week was another Pikachu Illustrator, this one a Pokémon Pikachu Illustrator Unnumbered Promo graded PSA 9 that sold for $5 million through Heritage on Sept. 18.

The result nearly doubled the No. 2 sale and underscored the market’s continued preference for PSA-graded examples at the highest end of the hobby. With two Pikachu Illustrator cards leading the way, the card once again proved why it sits near the top of the Pokémon collecting hierarchy.

A Week That Reset Expectations For High-End TCG Sales

The five biggest TCG sales from Sept. 13-20 totaled $11,339,471, a figure that would have been difficult to imagine only a short time ago. The week featured two Pikachu Illustrator cards, a Gem Mint Alpha Black Lotus, a sealed 1st Edition Base Set booster box and a PSA 10 Legendary Collection Charizard, with every one of them clearing the half-million-dollar mark.

For collectors tracking the top end of the market, the week offered another reminder that vintage Pokémon and early Magic remain among the most powerful names in the hobby. The presence of both sealed product and high-grade singles on the same leaderboard also showed how broad the demand remains for elite TCG material.

With the top five all finishing above $500,000, the week stood out not just for the size of the individual sales, but for the depth of the market behind them.
