Collectors opening 2025-26 Topps Chrome Update Basketball may notice some cards that do not match the standard base design or a regular parallel. In this product, those unusual pulls can be one of three variation types: Image Variations, Denim Tears Variations, or Minions Variations.

Each variation has its own checklist, visual cues, and chase level. Some are easier to identify at a glance, while others require a closer look at the card’s design or photo choice. The three variation groups also carry different pack odds, and in some cases, their own parallel rainbows.

Denim Tears Variations

Topps has continued to build collaborations with culturally relevant brands across its sports card releases, and 2025-26 Topps Chrome Update Basketball includes a Denim Tears Variation set tied to Tremaine Emory, the founder of Denim Tears. Emory’s artistic approach and clothing designs are described on the brand’s website as interpretations of the “personal experiences and collective history (and) overlooked yet highly influential narratives at the heart of the Black American experience.”

For this variation, Topps printed one of the Denim Tears patterns across the card border, creating a distinct look that separates these cards from the standard base versions. The checklist includes the first 90 veterans on the base checklist and 10 select rookies.

These cards are extremely scarce. The source notes that a Denim Tears card falls once every 303 hobby boxes, or 1:26 cases. Pack odds across the product formats are as follows:

  • Hobby - 1:6,054
  • Jumbo - 1:2,415
  • Delight - 1:201
  • Value - 1:17,433
  • Mega - 1:109,866
  • Fanatics - 1:8,774

Image Variations

Image Variations remain a familiar feature in Topps Chrome products, and they are easy to recognize in Topps Chrome Update Basketball once a collector knows what to look for. These cards feature alternate photographs, typically posed shots, and they also use a Speckle foil pattern that is exclusive to the Image Variation cards.

The checklist for Image Variations includes the first 40 veterans on the base checklist and 10 select rookies. While they are not common pulls, they are more attainable than the other two variation types in the product.

According to the source, Image Variations land 1:150 hobby packs, or 1:8 boxes, which means collectors should expect at least one per case. Additional pack odds by format are listed below:

  • Jumbo - 1:68
  • Delight - 1:48
  • Value - 1:324
  • Mega - 1:223
  • Fanatics - 1:213

Image Variations also have their own parallel rainbow. In addition to the base versions, collectors can chase six parallel levels for each player, beginning with Green Speckle /99 and ending with Superfractor 1/1.

The parallel odds are as follows:

  • Green Speckle /99 - Hobby 1:1,513; Jumbo 1:677; Delight 1:446; Value 1:3,263; Mega 1:2,278; Fanatics 1:2,106
  • Gold Speckle /50 - Hobby 1:2,994; Jumbo 1:1,340; Delight 1:892; Value 1:6,515; Mega 1:4,431; Fanatics 1:4,129
  • Orange Speckle /25 - Hobby 1:5,998; Jumbo 1:2,679; Delight 1:1,724; Value 1:13,029; Mega 1:8,847; Fanatics 1:8,099
  • Black Speckle /10 - Hobby 1:15,063; Jumbo 1:6,782; Delight 1:4,309; Value 1:32,230; Mega 1:22,383; Fanatics 1:19,142
  • Red Speckle /5 - Hobby 1:30,361; Jumbo 1:13,858; Delight 1:8,618; Value 1:64,459; Mega 1:45,150; Fanatics 1:35,094
  • Superfractor 1/1 - Hobby 1:161,920; Jumbo 1:79,680; Delight 1:25,854; Value 1:322,295; Mega 1:218,225; Fanatics 1:210,560

Minions Variations

The rarest and most unusual of the three variation groups is the Minions Variation, created in collaboration with Universal and Illumination Studios. These cards reimagine five players as cartoon characters, tying the promotion to the release of Minions & Monsters, which reached theaters on July 1.

The five players with Minions Variations are Nikola Jokić, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Stephen Curry, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Cooper Flagg. On the cards, each player is transformed into a Minions character, giving the set one of the most distinctive looks in the product.

These are very tough pulls. The source lists the base Minions Variation odds at 1:12,456 packs, or 1:623 boxes. Additional format odds are below:

  • Jumbo - 1:4,830
  • Delight - 1:761
  • Value - 1:35,073
  • Mega - 1:219,731
  • Fanatics - 1:17,547

Minions Variations also have two parallel levels. Unlike the Image Variations, there are only Red /5 and Superfractor 1/1 versions.

  • Red /5 - Hobby 1:253,001; Jumbo 1:99,850; Delight 1:8,287; Value 1:708,750; Mega 1:2,419,263; Fanatics 1:210,560
  • Superfractor 1/1 - Hobby 1:1,214,400; Jumbo 1:479,279; Delight 1:39,776; Value 1:3,402,000

How Collectors Can Identify the Variations

Each variation type in 2025-26 Topps Chrome Update Basketball has a different visual identity, which makes the chase more interesting for collectors opening packs.

  • Denim Tears Variations use a Denim Tears border pattern.
  • Image Variations feature alternate posed photographs and a Speckle foil pattern exclusive to the subset.
  • Minions Variations show players reimagined as Minions characters.

Because the checklists are limited and the odds vary widely by format, these cards can be easy to miss if a collector is only looking for standard base cards and traditional parallels. The Image Variations are the most approachable of the three, while Denim Tears and Minions are significantly tougher to find.

Checklist Notes and Parallel Chases

The variation checklists are not full-set mirrors of the base release. Instead, each subset focuses on a specific group of players:

  • Denim Tears Variations - first 90 veterans and 10 select rookies
  • Image Variations - first 40 veterans and 10 select rookies
  • Minions Variations - Nikola Jokić, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Stephen Curry, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Cooper Flagg

For collectors who chase player rainbows, the Image Variations are especially notable because they add six more parallel tiers to pursue. The Minions Variations also have parallels, but only two levels are available. Denim Tears Variations are presented as a distinct rare find with no parallel details provided in the source.

With multiple variation types spread across different levels of scarcity, 2025-26 Topps Chrome Update Basketball gives collectors several different kinds of hits to watch for in packs. Some will stand out immediately thanks to their artwork or border treatment, while others may only reveal themselves after a close inspection of the photo and foil pattern.

Collectors who pull one of these cards may want to compare the design carefully against the standard base card and the known variation traits before assuming it is a regular parallel.
