The recent Goldin Auctions April Elite sale was marked by notable sales involving memorabilia from basketball stars Anthony Edwards and Victor Wembanyama. The event coincided with a playoff game where Anthony Edwards led the Minnesota Timberwolves to victory, likely boosting interest in his memorabilia.
An early NBA jersey worn by Anthony Edwards, from his fourth career game, was sold for $118,978, setting a record for any Edwards jersey sold publicly. The jersey, which comes with MeiGray/NBA authentication and photomatching, was worn when Edwards recorded his first career block and added 12 points to his record. Edwards' rising star status was further confirmed during the 2024 playoffs where he joined Kobe Bryant as one of the youngest players to score over 40 points in consecutive postseason games.
Additionally, an Edwards 2020-21 Panini National Treasures Rookie Patch Autograph card, graded BGS GEM MINT 9.5 with a Beckett 10 for autographs, fetched $85,550 at the auction.
Victor Wembanyama also saw significant interest in his memorabilia, particularly his rookie cards. A 2023-24 Panini Prizm Green Shimmer First Off The Line rookie card, numbered 1 of 5 and graded PSA 10, sold for $113,460. Another rare card, a Gold Shimmer rookie numbered 7/10, ended at $49,410.
The auction wasn't just about modern basketball stars. A 1996-97 Kobe Bryant Topps Chrome Refractor rookie card achieved $92,720, while a 2018 Panini Prizm World Cup Gold Power Prizm Kylian Mbappe rookie card, graded BGS MINT 9, went for $92,190.
Former Duke star Cherokee Parks' NCAA Championship and other rings also went under the hammer, with his 1994 Championship ring achieving $44,320.
Photographs capturing pivotal moments early in the careers of Michael Jordan and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar were also part of the auction, selling for $15,982 and $14,640 respectively.
The sale further included a jersey from Fernando Tatis’s early MLB days, capturing his first career road game, which sold for $10,098. This diverse range of memorabilia underscores the robust interest in sports collectibles spanning multiple generations and sports.
