Antiques Roadshow never fails to amaze viewers with the surprising worth of everyday possessions. From forgotten heirlooms to rare collectibles, the show uncovers treasures that often leave their owners stunned. In one remarkable episode, a guest brought in a collection of vintage baseball cards from the 1950s, completely unaware of their extraordinary value.

Here’s the story of how a near tragedy turned into a priceless discovery.

A Baseball Card Collection Saved from Disaster

During a stop in Green Bay, Antiques Roadshow expert Grant Zahajko met a woman carrying a bundle of her husband’s old baseball cards. Zahajko, a fan of such finds, remarked, “I love it when mom doesn’t throw away my baseball cards.”

The guest explained how the cards had miraculously survived. She recalled that her husband, like many of his friends, had grown up collecting baseball cards. While most kids either pinned them to their walls or lost them when their mothers threw them out, her mother-in-law, Maude, kept them safely stored in a grocery bag in the attic.

However, the cards almost didn’t make it. The woman revealed that just one month after she had decided to organize the collection, a tornado struck their home. The attic was destroyed, and everything inside was lost—except for the baseball cards she had rescued. “It’s a miracle I pulled them out when I did,” she said, adding that her husband had no idea they still had them.

Expert Appraisal: A Fortune in Baseball Cards

When the cards were presented, Zahajko immediately recognized their significance. He highlighted three standout items from the collection:

  1. 1952 Topps Jackie Robinson Card
Zahajko called this the best-preserved card in the set, giving it a 6 out of 10 grade. He valued it between $2,000 and $4,000.
  2. 1954 Ted Williams Card by Wilson Franks
While there was minor staining on the back of this card, its condition still merited an impressive appraisal of $2,000 to $4,000.
  3. 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle Rookie Card
Despite being the most worn of the three, the Mickey Mantle rookie card is an iconic piece for any collector. Zahajko noted that bidding on such a rare card typically begins at $5,000, with a final value estimated between $30,000 and $40,000. “That’s the holy grail of Topps rookie cards,” Zahajko remarked.
The woman was floored by the appraisal. “You’re kidding!” she exclaimed, her voice full of disbelief. “Seriously! Oh my God. He’s [my husband] going to be so happy with that.”
