Fanatics and Sotheby’s have wrapped up their second collaborative auction, generating over $2 million in sales from just 11 cards. The standout item, a Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, and Dennis Rodman Triple Logoman card, fetched an impressive $600,000.

Titled the “Exquisite | Capsule Collection,” the auction exclusively featured premium cards from Upper Deck’s Exquisite series. Highlights included a LeBron James 2003 Rookie Patch Autograph, a Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Kobe Bryant Dual Logoman Autograph, and a Magic Johnson and Larry Bird Dual Logoman Patch Autograph.

The auction’s spotlight remained firmly on NBA legends, with many of the cards featuring Michael Jordan or LeBron James—or both. This focus underscored the ongoing demand for iconic figures in the sports card market.

The event follows their successful first collaboration, “Holy Grails,” where a LeBron James Exquisite card sold for $432,000. This time, another version of the same card reached $456,000, highlighting the continued value of premium cards while reflecting market adjustments. Just a few years ago, the same card sold for over $900,000, with similar versions peaking at over $2 million in 2022.

Upper Deck’s Exquisite line revolutionized the sports card industry by introducing rookie patch autographs, which are now staples for high-end collectors. Products like Panini’s National Treasures owe much of their popularity to Exquisite’s groundbreaking approach, pioneered by Karvin Cheung in the early 2000s.

Fanatics continues to pursue its mission to expand the hobby to new heights. By collaborating with Sotheby’s for these high-profile auctions, they aim to position sports cards as cultural artifacts worthy of art gallery showcases and prestigious sales events. This strategic approach seeks to redefine the perception of sports cards, demonstrating their value as both collectibles and works of art.
