At a recent Christie's and Hunt Auctions event, a rare 1938 Babe Ruth Brooklyn Dodgers uniform and a significant 1968 Hank Aaron jersey led the baseball memorabilia sale. The auction, which also featured the Geddy Lee Collection, amassed over $6.8 million in total sales.
The highlight of the auction was the sale of Babe Ruth's Dodgers road uniform, which fetched $882,000. Hank Aaron's Atlanta Braves home jersey, worn when he hit his landmark 500th career home run, also drew significant attention, selling for $567,000.
The auction included an array of other notable items, such as a single-signed baseball by President Herbert Hoover from the Geddy Lee Collection, which sold for $214,200, far surpassing its $25,000 estimate. Additionally, a Mickey Mantle-signed baseball with an inscription about Brooks Robinson’s play at third base from the same collection went for $30,240.
One of the most distinctive items was a photo from the Gladstone Collection, showing Civil War soldiers with baseball equipment. This piece achieved $113,400 at auction, greatly exceeding its $10,000 estimate.
David Hunt, President of Hunt Auctions, expressed his honor in representing such extraordinary collections. He noted that the auction results not only showcased the robust market for historic baseball memorabilia but also emphasized the high value placed on items from significant private collections.
